Cancellation Buzz: These TV Shows Are at Risk

At the broadcast networks, very few of this season's freshmen series have been officially axed. But NBC abruptly pulled Powerless from its schedule this week. While there’s been no official work from the network on a full cancellation, executive producer Patrick Schumacker tweeted this: "Powerless will not air this week or next. This, I know for sure. I can guess some other things but they're not good. Thanks for watching." If the finale does air, there will be quite a bit of closure, co-showrunner Justin Halpern said after this week’s announcement. (It didn't take superpowers to see this outcome.)

Let's take a look at some of the other network series whose fates have yet to be determined:

Very doubtful:

Conviction, ABC - In November, the network announced that it would not increase the drama's episode order beyond the initial 13.
Notorious, ABC - The show's episode order was reduced from 13 to 10 way back in October.
The Odd Couple, CBS - For the third consecutive season, CBS decided not to order more than the initially requested 13 episodes.
Scream Queens, FOX - After a creatively disappointing second season and a finale rating that was well below Season 1's, Ryan Murphy's horror-comedy seems destined for the great television morgue.
Training Day, CBS - Even before Bill Paxton's death, this show was an unlikely renewal.
Pure Genius, CBS - The network in November decided not to order additional episodes of the medical drama.
Frequency, The CW - A ratings and critical non-starter.
No Tomorrow, The CW - The fantasy rom-com finished its 13-episode season with a whimper.

Outlook not so good:

Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, CBS - Among the worst-reviewed shows of 2016 and a consistent under-performer.
The Catch, ABC - No one wants to say no to Shonda Rhimes, but even the retooled version has been a disappointment.
American Crime, ABC - Critically lauded (and one of few broadcast network Emmy contenders), but it’s ABC's worst-rated show.
Imaginary Mary, ABC - Well, have you watched it?
Son of Zorn, FOX - A creative premise, but this animated series never took off.
Ransom, CBS - Likely to be a last-minute decision for the network.
APB, FOX - The show ticked up a bit in its season finale, but it's probably not enough.
The Exorcist, FOX - Many critics came around on the show as it progressed, but the ratings never did.
The Blacklist: Redemption, NBC - The original series is in decent shape, but this one was DOA.
Rosewood, FOX - After a pretty serious sophomore slump, the network shifted the show to Friday, where it's also floundered.
Sleepy Hollow, FOX - A shock renewal last season, it's time is probably up.
Making History, FOX - A serious long shot, despite solid reviews (the Happy Endings curse?).
Secrets and Lies, ABC - ABC execs admitted in January that this was among the "less likely" series to return.
Emerald City, NBC - It would take some serious wizarding.
The Real O’Neals, ABC - A quality show that fits right in among ABC's family sitcoms, but viewers just aren't tuning in.
Hunted, CBS - A pretty buzzless show, ratings plummeted by season's end.
Pitch, FOX - A ratings loser, but this is a great show. Creator Dan Fogelman, also behind NBC's This Is Us, just may be able to work some magic.

Cannot predict now:

Dr. Ken, ABC - About as much of a tossup as there is for ABC.
Timeless, NBC - This got off to a good start following The Voice in the fall, but lost steam without the strong lead-in.
Once Upon a Time, ABC - Ratings are at an all-time low and ABC's Channing Dungey said the show would need to be retooled if it were to be picked up for Season 7.
Elementary, CBS - Always on the bubble, creator Rob Doherty has said he's optimistic.
iZombie, The CW - A great show, but it's just barely beating the certain-to-be-canceled Frequency's numbers.
2 Broke Girls, CBS - Kind of a surprise not to have been part of the network's big renewal earlier this spring.
The Great Indoors, CBS - The ratings may be slightly inflated because of its usual lead-in, The Big Bang Theory, but it’s still odd that this remains on the bubble, actually.

Sod it. I'm enjoying the easy watching that is The Catch (Mireille's dresses and bags!), Ransom (lead actor's blue eyes, lol) and DOA aka The Blacklist: Redemption (kick Famke Janssen and it might have a chance but if it's cancelled (*whimper*) at least we'll have Tom back in The Blacklist).

Pitch should not be cancelled, that would be a crime. I'll check out No tomorrow, TvFanboy, thanks for the recommendation! : )

This is why I have the list "Oh no, why, why did they cancel this show?" 101 shows in, 80 something comments and after this lot above possibly/probably get canceled, even more upset sidereeler's might be adding their shows to the long list we've compiled. It's a bittersweet feeling, the list is great as we all get to to chat about shows and see everyone's reactions to their endings but at the same time we're all mostly still in limbo as to the final episode. All shows should at least be wrapped up in one final episode. Put that in the contract, TV execs, respect your audience enough that if a show isn't working, don't just pull it or cancel, wrap it all up for all of us who were enjoying it.

@scotwot, I was reading this article thinking "well, this will increase the number of shows on the 'ON,W,WDTCTS?' list (just from my opinion, let alone others!).

Do the TV execs realise that one of the reasons people are probably not watching their new shows, is because they don't want to get invested in something new, only for those shows to be cancelled? And that it's even worse when the show hasn't been resolved?

The only one I have hopes for is Timeless. (Many series I didn't watch, though.)

iZombie is still in-progress, but I'm very positive it will continue. Only question: Will they ever do a crossover with any of The CW's many other comic book-based series? (That includes Riverdale, of course.) :-P

Absolutely would miss Elementary. The Exorcist deserves a second season more than any other on this list, imo.

Emerald City and Conviction have weaknesses, but I enjoyed them.

I don't know why they added the fluffy animated annoyance to Imaginary Mary. Change the name and get rid of the muppet... Jenna Elfman (and the amazing actor playing the teenage boy) is all you need.

Ransom, Timeless, and Pure Genius were decent time fillers, but I honestly can't say I will remember them for long if they go away.

T3stud0 is totally eight about Imaginary Mary. Before they introduced that stupid imaginary friend, it kind of seemed like a good comedy. Without it, I think it could be one. I love Rachel Dratch but the show is better without that little monster.

Old_Maid, I agree with you completely. There are many shows I didn't start watching until they'd been on a few seasons, or waited until they were over (to see if they were allowed a proper ending or not) and then binge watched them. I love The Catch and Timeless and I'm a huge Steven Fry fan and once in a while I watch The Great Indoors because of him.

The tv execs don't seem to understand we're afraid to start watching a new show because we don't want to see a show we love get the ax. Case in point when SyFy cancelled Incorporated. We have to wait and see if someone else like Netflix or Amazon will have some common sense to pick it up. Show us come compassion and mercy! Networks hire people with a brains and heart!

There are quite a few of"my" shows on this list. And it would be really sad to see some of them go. Others haven't been that great from the start and I can understand why they would want to cancel them.
But all together, the TV Execs that make the decisions need to keep in mind that people get seriously upset when you cancel really good shows after only a few episodes (like Time After Time) or just discontinue them after one season (like Atlantis). I agree with Old_Maid, viewers will think twice about starting to watch a new show for fear it will be cancelled on them too soon.
The people who are in charge don't really seem to know what they themselves want, not talking about what the viewers want!

So... For the "very doubtful" there aren't any big loss (in my opinion)
BUT... For the "Outlook not so good". I can't believe I'm seeing Son of Zorn in that list! That show is so hilarious... I'd really get upset at FOX if they cancel that one. That show really got lot of potential and has done already a bunch of amazing episodes.
As for the "Cannot predict now". Even if I really liked that show, I got trouble to see where they could go with Dr.Ken... Community n2? And Izombie is a different Zombie type show watchable by anyone. This one should still go for several seasons I think.

Six of those shows are on my tracker. :( And I really love at least four of them. Especially Once Upon a Time and 2 Broke Girls. I think Frequency is a very good show. It deserves a chance, one more season, at least.

Nooooo! Really? Pitch! Damn! :(

@Old_Maid, I know, it will increase the numbers on our list but that's always bittersweet, I do like the shortened version of the list's title, tho. lolol Much better than writing it out all the time (shoulda picked a better title!). :D

@Old_Maid and everyone who agreed. You're exactly right about putting people off watching shows, I went through the list and there are 24 shows on it that I didn't start because I didn't want the cancellation monster to get in the way of me enjoying the story, worrying there may only be four episodes before it's canceled, or even just one episode! I've got a binge list longer than my arm because of this - most of them have been canceled, without resolution. #sickofthis

I'll go and add Pitch to the list. Anyone who wants to is welcome to come along and add their show in. :/
