Akatsuki No Yona Episode #24 Anime Review (Season Finale)

Not all who wander are lost. Sometimes they’re just oblivious, and hungry. Yona’s party is back to camping under the stars and searching for the final dragon to add to their group. All of this life on the road has hardened Yona, who buckles down to butcher a deer for dinner. Suddenly a blond stranger wanders into their camp, drooling, and sits down to share a meal with the group. He just happens to be the yellow dragon warrior, how convenient! A young man of no special talent, who recognizes the other dragon warriors but doesn’t have that powerful awakening that they did. Yes, Jeno (Zeno?) is a suspiciously lucky wanderer, and when Yona asks him if he’ll join her group he agrees without hesitation. Well, that was easy! Yona does properly introduce herself to him later on. Even she can recognize that he’s one of the dragons. READ MORE...

Akatsuki No Yona Episode #23 Anime Review

That cliffhanger at the end of the last episode was a real shocker. Lest we forget that Yona is on the run, who does she bump into but the very man she’s declared vengeance on! Soo-won is still out checking out his domain, and fate would have it that his next stop was Awa. He is out to clean up the kingdom but Yona beat him to the port city and did some of his dirty work for him. Yona doesn’t know how to react to Soo-won’s sudden appearance. I don’t think I would have done any better in her place. Rather than capture her, Soo-won hides her from his men. Yona almost blows everything reaching for his sword, and Soo-won casually stops her rash move without blowing her cover. He departs from Yona without her saying a word to him. She doesn’t take the reunion well, breaking down after he disappears from view, much to Hak’s shock. Nor does she mention the meeting with anyone else in her party. Whatever form their final confrontation will take it will have to happen later. READ MORE...

Akatsuki No Yona Episode #22 Anime Review

Yona signaled the pirates at the end of the last episode and this episode picks up at that moment diving straight back into the action. The repercussions of her daring plan could have been bad, and almost are. Yona was risking her life and the lives of the woman on board and Yun, but she holds fast and is rewarded by a last second rescue from Jaeha and Shinah. This is the battle that we’ve been waiting for, and the animators make sure it gets the love and attention it deserves. Action scenes in this show have always been relatively simple, but well animated and highly effective. This episode is no different. With all of the boys bringing their best moves we’re treated to a riot of hurricane kicks from Jaeha and treated to Shinah’s swordsmanship. We’ve seen plenty of Hak and Kija’s moves before but the extra layer of gloss is always nice. The tension feels real and it’s riveting stuff. READ MORE...

Akatsuki No Yona Episode #21 Anime Review

Yona and Yun went through with a dangerous plan to sneak aboard the ship of slaves to free the captive women at the end of the last episode. Dropped through a trap door they find themselves locked in with the other girls, all of whom have basically given up hope. I have to wonder at the logic of their plan, which had so many possibilities of going sideways. Starting with the drop into the holding cell. Yona sprains an ankle straight away in the drop. Then there is the run in with Kumji as he comes to inspect the merchandise. READ MORE...

Akatsuki No Yona Episode #20 Anime Review

A plan is hatched. The pirates will strike at the fleet out on open water away from the town. Gigan believes that Lord Kumji is selling women and children into slavery in a neighboring kingdom, and that one of the ships is likely to hold the captives. One against seven isn’t exactly great odds, but three dragons and a general are a force to be reckoned with. Meanwhile Yona looking for any way to help out during the preparations for the battle. She wanders the camp looking for something to do before Jaeha sweeps her off her feet and takes her with him to scout out the town. When they get there we get our first glimpse of Lord Kumji and see how the people flee from him. One young woman disguises herself as a man to escape capture and she tell Jaeha of how her friend was lured away to an unknown fate by the officials. READ MORE...

Akatsuki No Yona Episode #19 Anime Review

I keep forgetting they changed the opening theme and every week the new opening strikes me as really jarring. That’s never going to stop being a really strange choice of song. Yona accepted the challenge put forth by Gigan. She must retrieve a medicinal herb which only grows in a cave on a steep cliff. There’s only a single narrow pathway to reach it, and Yona must go it alone. With trembling legs and tear filled eyes she inches her way along the cliff… with the green dragon Jaeha shadowing her. Akatsuki No Yona Episode #18 Anime Review

A merry chase is going on around the port town of Awa. Jaeha still has his eyes set on recruiting Hak to his pirate family, while Yona’s group is pursuing the green dragon, who just happens to be Jaeha. The town guards have placed wanted posters around for both Jaeha and Hak for their roles in beating up officials. This extends to a humorous series of events as the various groups avoid and collide. Usually I find this sort of humor to come off as awkward, but this show makes it all work somehow. READ MORE...

Akatsuki No Yona Episode #17 Anime Review

This week we rejoin Yona and her entourage heading for the sea port of Awa. The group has been traveling the entire time since the last time we saw them without incident. Kija and Sinha feel the presence of the Green Dragon in the area, and the group arrives at the ocean without incident. The same can’t be said when Hak goes into town alone to buy some supplies and immediately feels that something is wrong. When he spots two local officials harassing a woman he tries to keep his cover but blows it to rescue her. He isn’t the only one to dash to the rescue, as a green haired playboy also steps in to play hero. The two lead the officials on a merry chase through the town before Hak returns to the group empty handed. READ MORE...

Akatsuki No Yona Episode #16 Anime Review

Soo-won has proposed a set of war games to entertain the Earth Tribe a bit, and to test Geun-tea. What form those games would take is revealed as this episode opens. There are two teams made up of three ranks of players. A king, nobles, and commoners. Commoners can only attack the king, the nobles can only attack the commoners, and the king can only attack the nobles. Points are awarded upon breaking a plate strapped to each contestants head. All of this is being done while Soo-won and Guen-tea are wearing heavily decorated festival garb. READ MORE...

Akatsuki No Yona Episode #15 Anime Review

After fourteen episodes I didn’t expect them to change the opening of Yona. I certainly didn’t expect them to change the opening to some random techno-dance track of all things. What the heck? They didn’t even bother reanimating large stretches of the sequence, they just rearranged it! While I wasn’t a fan of the original opening that much because it seemed like the animation was an afterthought, this new music just doesn’t fit the show at all! READ MORE...
