Fox Cancels Son of Zorn, Making History, APB

Fox has canceled three freshman series: drama APB and comedies Making History and Son of Zorn. The decision comes ahead of the networks upfront presentation in New York next week, where they will announce their 2017-18 lineup. The cancellation comes days after Fox gave the axe to supernatural drama Sleepy Hollow after four seasons and the Morris Chestnut drama Rosewood after two seasons. The network has also canceled freshman baseball drama Pitch, starring Kylie Bunbury and Mark-Paul Gosselaar. ...Read More... //

Cancellation Buzz: These TV Shows Are at Risk

At the broadcast networks, very few of this season's freshmen series have been officially axed. But NBC abruptly pulled Powerless from its schedule this week. While there’s been no official work from the network on a full cancellation, executive producer Patrick Schumacker tweeted this: "Powerless will not air this week or next. This, I know for sure. I can guess some other things but they're not good. Thanks for watching." If the finale does air, there will be quite a bit of closure, co-showrunner Justin Halpern said after this week’s announcement. (It didn't take superpowers to see this outcome.) Let's take a look at some of the other network series whose fates have yet to be determined: ● Very doubtful: Conviction , ABC - In November, the network announced that it would not increase the drama's episode order beyond the initial 13. Notorious , ABC - The show's episode order was reduced from 13 to 10 way back in October. The Odd Couple , CBS - For the third consecutive season, CBS decided not to order more than the initially requested 13 episodes. Scream Queens , FOX - After a creatively disappointing second season and a finale rating that was well below Season 1's, Ryan Murphy's horror-comedy seems destined for the great television morgue. Training Day , CBS - Even before Bill Paxton's death, this show was an unlikely renewal. Pure Genius , CBS - The network in November decided not to order additional episodes of the medical drama. Frequency , The CW - A ratings and critical non-starter. No Tomorrow , The CW - The fantasy rom-com finished its 13-episode season with a whimper. ● Outlook not so good: Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders , CBS - Among the worst-reviewed shows of 2016 and a consistent under-performer. The Catch , ABC - No one wants to say no to Shonda Rhimes, but even the retooled version has been a disappointment. American Crime , ABC - Critically lauded (and one of few broadcast network Emmy contenders), but it’s ABC's worst-rated show. Imaginary Mary , ABC - Well, have you watched it? Son of Zorn , FOX - A creative premise, but this animated series never took off. Ransom , CBS - Likely to be a last-minute decision for the network. APB , FOX - The show ticked up a bit in its season finale, but it's probably not enough. The Exorcist , FOX - Many critics came around on the show as it progressed, but the ratings never did. The Blacklist: Redemption , NBC - The original series is in decent shape, but this one was DOA. Rosewood , FOX - After a pretty serious sophomore slump, the network shifted the show to Friday, where it's also floundered. Sleepy Hollow , FOX - A shock renewal last season, it's time is probably up. Making History , FOX - A serious long shot, despite solid reviews (the Happy Endings curse?). Secrets and Lies , ABC - ABC execs admitted in January that this was among the "less likely" series to return. Emerald City , NBC - It would take some serious wizarding. The Real O’Neals , ABC - A quality show that fits right in among ABC's family sitcoms, but viewers just aren't tuning in. Hunted , CBS - A pretty buzzless show, ratings plummeted by season's end. Pitch , FOX - A ratings loser, but this is a great show. Creator Dan Fogelman, also behind NBC's This Is Us , just may be able to work some magic. ● Cannot predict now: Dr. Ken , ABC - About as much of a tossup as there is for ABC. Timeless , NBC - This got off to a good start following The Voice in the fall, but lost steam without the strong lead-in. Once Upon a Time , ABC - Ratings are at an all-time low and ABC's Channing Dungey said the show would need to be retooled if it were to be picked up for Season 7. Elementary , CBS - Always on the bubble, creator Rob Doherty has said he's optimistic. iZombie , The CW - A great show, but it's just barely beating the certain-to-be-canceled Frequency 's numbers. 2 Broke Girls , CBS - Kind of a surprise not to have been part of the network's big renewal earlier this spring. The Great Indoors , CBS - The ratings may be slightly inflated because of its usual lead-in, The Big Bang Theory , but it’s still odd that this remains on the bubble, actually. Despite being set in crime-ridden Chicago, Foxs APB hopes to offer an optimistic view of policing, according to showrunners. This is clearly a city that between gun violence, drug violence and gang violence, socio-economic disparity of all kinds is in the midst of a crime-ridden crisis, executive producer Trey Callaway said during the shows panel at the Television Critics Associations winter press tour Wednesday in Pasadena, California. ...Read More... //
