Better Call Saul: "Lantern" Review

F--ck, Chuck. What a gut punch of a final scene in Better Call Saul's Season 3 finale, "Lantern." There were a lot of moving parts in this episode and a lot of huge moments, but like last week's "Fall," the cliffhanger endings show the collateral damage of Jimmy's life on other people. There's a certain ambiguity in the final moments of the episode (something that Peter Gould kind of addressed in his Talking Saul appearance), but even if Chuck does somehow survive his suicide attempt, this sequence ties back to his earlier comment about Jimmy doing a really good job of destroying other peoples' lives. And interestingly, that was the biggest lesson Jimmy took away from this season, as we saw in his attempt to fix poor Irene's tattered social life. Jimmy is a character who tries to do good but is often pulled askew by his selfish wants and desires, leaving a trail of destruction in his wake. This season, it was Kim, Chuck and the lovely ladies at Sandpiper who he most directly impacted, but at the end of the episode, it's his own life he destroys for the sake of the "greater good." What's ironic is that in embracing the persona we come later to know is Saul Goodman, Jimmy is actually at his best. READ MORE...

Better Call Saul Season 3 Episode 9 Review: Fall

Kim learned the hard way: when you burn the candle at both ends, sometimes you get hurt. Really hurt. On Better Call Saul Season 3 Episode 9 , the characters continued their inexorable descent, but it's Kim who actually suffered real physical harm. Kim took the GatwoodOil job only after seeing Jimmy revert to his old ways to get money for his share of expenses. I know she has a good heart and is looking to help Jimmy any way she can, but the reality check at the end had to be a gut punch for her.  ...Read More...

Better Call Saul Season 3 Episode 8 Review: Slip

As we've feared, Jimmy goes farther down the rabbit hole, and it doesn't look like he will be able to dig himself out. On Better Call Saul Season 3 Episode 8 , all the main characters (with the exception of maybe Chuck) find themselves descending into the darkness, and the jury is out as to who will be able to make their way into the light again. I have to say I loved seeing Jimmy's old partner in crime Marco again, but this was tinged with sadness, considering how his story turned out.   ...Read More...
