The character types are very 'Lord of the Rings x Harry Potter' and set with the grim machinations of 'Game of Thrones'. There are many underlying sub-stories that would possibly elaborate in any consecutive seasons. It took watching 5 episodes to connect the thread between some characters, with really potent prejudices and bigotry.
Its a vast setting that is dark and gloomy, however I enjoyed the retrospective genre of a community set in 1900's.
Well worth a binge watch for a rainy day. Enjoyed this show hugely.

Everyone seems so impressed by this show but I am not. However, I am impressed by the set design, costumes and CGI, all of which get a 5/5; the story is not that original of course because it is simply a retelling of actual real life history in a fantasy context... discrimination against those who look different and have different beliefs is basically what nearly every country has in common in their history and unfortunately some still do the same today.

So once we get around the fact that the plot isn't particularly unique, we then realize that the rest is set dressing and a very elaborate and beautiful fantasy world that has been created. If you've seen Roots, simply imagine the slaves as Faeries and change the setting from the plantation to Turinoc and we suddenly have Carnival Row.

Is the acting Emmy worthy? No. I have not a single complaint, the actors were all solid, but nothing here should win any awards.

Is the plot suspenseful/unpredictable? Nope.

Everyone seems to be enamored with the packaging of the show rather than the content of the show itself. If we remove the set dressing, and give the characters regular names and appearance, the review wouldn't be so highly rated because although the acting is good, it is not a very compelling show overall. Don't let the creation of a new world fool you into thinking that this isn't horribly predictable or make you assume there's excellent writing going on here... there isn't. I love the fantasy genre, but this show was weak... beautiful, but weak. I wanted to fall in love with it but I simply like it.

I feel like this could have been so much better than it actually was. The premise was great, but it was extremely slow moving at times and not so great acting. I'm not sure how well a second season will do. Had such high hopes for this as the trailers looked really awesome, but have to admit, I'm slightly disappointed.

A little of something for everyone. Romance, horror, fantasy, suspense .Reminds me of Game of Thrones and I can say the plot and the pace are good.
Surprisingly good performance from Cara and I love this new trend to direct the movies and series.

As far as entertaining goes, I think it's perfect. It kept me enthralled and at the edge of my seat. As a fan of fantasy novels and movies I instantly fell in love with this world and its characters. It is a bit Game of Thrones-esque with the violence and sex, but that's never bothered me ever, if that is something you don't enjoy than this show is probably not for you. It's rated TV-MA and everyone complaining about the more mature themes have known that going in to it. This is not family friendly, it is definitely a dark fantasy tv show. People shouldn't be complaining about the swearing, or the violence, or the sex because that is exactly what the show was advertising; if you were thinking of watching it with a younger audience I would advise the same consideration one would have when showing someone a R-rated movie.

I believe the romance in this show is complicated - all of the relationships are - and I think the situations are intriguing. I love the blend between fantasy and a Victorian kind of world and how it all pushes and pulls at each other. I thought the acting was good, and while the special effects aren't Game of Thrones levels (really, what is?) they didn't take me out of the story. No piece of media is perfect, but I do think Carnival Row is worth your time.

Definitely something new and different. Others keep trying to compare it to GoT crossed with other series but none of the comparisons do it justice. It's a dark but somewhat familiar take on mythical creatures made manifest in our reality. It works for me. The plot line was sufficiently complex that I didn't see it coming. The casting and acting excellent. The production values just awesome. And the music was both haunting and spot on. Looking forward to Season 2 as this season seemed like an amuse-bouche for what looks to be a much larger and epic offering to come.

Totally awesome! I was hooked from the first minute. Great story, great characters and great actors. It is so NOT your typical fairy tale story. It is set in this Victorian/Steampunk fantasy land and centers around a war that left a lot of fae creatures homeless and seeking refuge in The Burgh. It has this gothic vibe going on which is really cool.
The characters are well drawn and you get into the story really quick even without knowing the background of the main characters which is not revealed until the third episode. The story might be predictable but it has quite a few unexpected twists and turns and keeps you glued to the screen the whole time.
The settings are awesome and something that you rarely see in a series.

I can't believe there are only eight episodes to this first season. But I am so relieved that Amazon renewed it for another season. Hopefully with more episodes to it. I know I cannot wait for the next season!
