The Most Important Shows on TV: Week of October 17, 2016

Which TV series will your friends (and the entire internet) be talking about this week? Stay informed — or at least be able to fake it — with SideReel's weekly guide to The Most Important Shows on TV.   Chance (Series Premiere) Wednesday at 3 a.m. on Hulu Why: Another white coat? Yes, but Hugh Laurie's new role as a TV doctor takes him on a very different journey, during which he encounters corruption and violence as he tries to help a patient, all while dealing with his own contentious divorce and strained relationship with his daughter. This psychological thriller with a noir-ish vibe is based on Kem Nunn’s novel of the same name. It's a tense drama that could bring more awards buzz to Hulu and to Laurie (who famously lost six times for House ). Laurie is the main attraction as a San Francisco neuropsychiatrist, but there's a solid supporting cast, including Gretchen Mol, Ethan Suplee, Paul Adelstein, and LisaGay Hamilton. And the Oscar-nominated director of Room , Lenny Abrahamson, is at the helm for the premiere. Prepare to talk about: House , because that accent is just so familiar to TV viewers; Hulu continuing to up its game.   Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (Season Premiere) Friday at 9 p.m. on The CW Why: Despite delivering a full season of innovative, thoughtful, funny television, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend 's second-season order came as a bit of a surprise. Broadcast television’s lowest-rated show does not normally get renewed. But this is not your normal show. Rachel Bloom's comedy-musical hybrid is excruciatingly truthful and incredibly entertaining. Among the most diverse shows on TV, the series tackles an incredible variety of subjects both dark and light, from mental health and self-loathing to summer camp and party busses. And this season has the potential to be even better. Now that Rebecca has admitted to Josh that he was the reason she moved to West Covina (just two hours from the beach!), there's a whole new world of material to play with. And new people. Cast additions include Pitch Perfect star Brittany Snow and Greek 's Scott Michael Foster as a lawyer who turns Rebecca's world upside down. Prepare to talk about: Why the show's music videos don't have millions of views; how Rebecca will bork everything (as Bloom has said, there's no show if Rebecca is happy and functional); whether Mrs. Hernandez will ever speak.   The Walking Dead (Season Premiere) Sunday at 9 p.m. on AMC Why: We're all waiting to find out what happened in Pee Pee Pants City . The Walking Dead 's killer cliffhanger, equally thrilling and frustrating for fans, finally will be resolved. And with it, Negan's reign of terror will begin. Everyone involved has talked about this season's premiere in glowing and terrifying terms. Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who plays the show's newest and most terrifying villain, described filming as "10 days of hell" because of the intensity of the story, while director Greg Nicotero said it was "by far the most emotional episode" he had ever shot. There's also Rick's blown confidence and Carole's physical and emotional fragility. If you like your Walking Dead extra dark, you're going to love this season. Prepare to talk about: Which member of Rick's survivor squad was decimated by Lucille; who's next to go.   T.J. DeGroat is the editor of SideReel. He is Team Greg. Fall TV: New Shows to Watch From Netflix, Hulu, Amazon

Part four of four. Part one, focused on CBS and The CW, is here ; part two, about ABC, NBC, and FOX, is here ; part three, about cable's buzziest new shows, is here . Peak TV: it's both a blessing and a curse. There are more scripted series than ever (an estimated 417 last year, according to FX's John Landgraf), and more great shows than ever. So with another wave of new content about to drown us, we're spotlighting the standouts we think you should add to your SideReel Tracker.   Startup Premieres Sept. 6 on Crackle You probably know Crackle as that second-tier streaming site that offers up a disappointing lineup of movies and, strangely, the Jerry Seinfeld series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee . Well, Sony's digital platform is taking another big step into the world of original programming with this crime drama about Miami techies trying to launch an unregulated digital currency. With Martin Freeman and Adam Brody among the stars, the series could give Crackle a little extra pop.   One Mississippi Premieres Sept. 9 on Amazon Tig Notaro has had a surreal five years, full of huge highs and overwhelming lows, some of which are dramatized in her highly anticipated show. In the series, which was part of Amazon's 2015 pilot season, Notaro returns to her hometown after the sudden death of her mother. On the scale of acting comedians, Notaro is somewhere between Seinfeld and Schumer. But she's surrounded herself was an outstanding cast. Bonus points for Casey Wilson in a recurring role.   Marvel's Luke Cage Premieres Sept. 30 on Netflix Mike Colter was great on Marvel's Jessica Jones , which introduced the crime-fighting fugitive with superhuman strength and unbreakable skin. Given Netflix's outstanding track record adapting Marvel creations, there's no reason to expect anything other than excellence here.   Chance Premieres Oct. 19 on Hulu Another white coat? Yes, but Hugh Laurie's new role as a San Francisco neuropsychiatrist takes him on a very different journey, during which he encounters corruption and violence as he tries to save lives. This psychological thriller with a noir-ish vibe could bring more awards buzz to Hulu.   Good Girls Revolt Premieres Oct. 28 on Amazon Grace Gummer, Meryl Streep's less annoying actress-daughter, continues her big TV year (after a noteworthy role on Mr. Robot ) in a period drama inspired by the historic lawsuit against Newsweek by its female staff. Also starring: Hunter Parrish, Chris Diamantopoulos, and Pitch Perfect 's Anna Camp.   Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life Premieres Nov. 25 on Netflix Our long national nightmare is over. Everyone (with good taste) will be a little more grateful this Thanksgiving as Netflix streams four 90-minute chapters continuing the stories of Lorelei and Rory, eight years after the beloved WB/CW drama ended. And yes, we will finally learn what those final four words are. (Hopefully not "it was a dream.")   You can find SideReel's Fall TV Preview here . Which are you looking forward to?
