Sword Art Online Episode #25 Anime Review

With a bit of a cheat and a sense of ease that will certainly bother some but will please others with its "game mechanics" aspect, the show moved quickly in the previous episode to bring Kirito and Asuna back together in the game, allowing larger elements to bring a sense of closure to it while also hinting that the future will not be anywhere near as easy. Considering what the pair went through back in Sword Art Online, I certainly can’t begrudge them having a bit of an easier time dealing with the endgame enemy that they had in this game or the little twist that was carried over from the previous game. It all felt like foundation material for the future more than anything else, and it also gave me what I really wanted; the two leads back together and a shift towards the real world to get the ending and new start that they should have together. Sword Art Online Episode #24 Anime Review

With a good bit of sacrifice in place in order to get through the World Tree, the reveal that there’s no floating city up there is a bit of a surprise, but not an unexpected one. With what we saw of the guardians that were keeping everyone out of it in the previous couple of episodes, there’s just the sense that the players were never actually supposed to get up there at all, or at least not for some time until it could be designed. With Kirito and a normal sized Yui racing around, we get to see some of the high tech structure of it and Kirito comes to the conclusion similar to that and just grinds his teeth all the more about what it is that his nemesis has been up to all this time. Sword Art Online Episode #23 Anime Review

With the reveal in the previous episode that Sugu didn’t know Kirito was her brother/cousin, it threw things off for me for a good bit as I had thought that was something that she already knew. The fallout from it is pretty bad as she was starting to fall for him thinking she was getting away at last from her brother, but to have that thrown back at her, unknowingly on both their parts, definitely has an impact. Even more so because she knows just how much her brother is in love with Asuna and the lengths he’s going to try and free her from the trap that she’s in now. Though it’s a little forced in some ways, the end result is one that has a really intriguing situation that has to be dealt with as best as possible since so much must still be done. READ MORE...

Sword Art Online Episode #22 Anime Review

With the tease at the end of the last episode with how close that Leafa and Kirito had come to Asuna, it was taken up a notch when Yui realized that "mommy’s" ID was just above them. That sets Kirito into an overreaction, an expected one to be sure, as he does his best to just leap up there, fly to her and rescue her from whatever fate has in store for her. Of course, he can go only so far and the limits are easily met, but it reinforces for him the intensity that he may not have felt for some time. And for Leafa, it’s made it painfully clear once again just how much he cares for her, as if the little hospital visit in the previous episode didn’t solidify that for her. It’s a brief opening bit overall, but it says so much and sets up so much as well. READ MORE...

Sword Art Online Episode #21 Anime Review

While ALfheim Online continues to be interesting in terms of mechanics and races, it’s definitely left me less than enamored with it when it comes to its visual design. We’ve mostly had out of the way places or basic small towns, but it’s not held me in the same way that Sword Art Online did. Though the World Tree itself has been an interesting piece from what little we’ve seen of it, it’s only this episode where the pair of Kirito and Leafa finally arrive at the base of things that we at long last see something that’s really worthy of a proper fantasy world in terms of scale and scope of design. Of course, they end up finally getting there at the same time that the server is shutting down for maintenance, which throws a mild kink into things. READ MORE...

Sword Art Online Episode #20 Anime Review

With Kirito and Leafa working together so well, they’ve had a few good adventures up to this point but it’s now reached an awkward stage. Things need to be done and Kirito is running out of time in general in order to save Asuna. But with his sense of justice, he can’t leave Leafa to her fate with the others that are pushing back against the Salamanders, who themselves have set up quite the little show of force. With both sides about to turn to full on war, Kirito manages to insert himself in the way that a young man does with a situation like this. Right in the middle of it. Taking into consideration his mindset from the Sword Art Online days, where he knows he can logout but still treats it all as very series, he takes a stand for Leafa’s group as an ambassador while faking out an alliance of some sort. Sword Art Online Episode #19 Anime Revew

With Kirito having gained more abilities and generally working things well when it comes to ALO, it’s been welcome to see that he’s adapted in a smart way. Rather than spend too much time with him waffling around trying to understand the system, he’s a smart playing using familiar concepts and adjusting well to how ALO interprets them But it also gave him some minor challenges as we saw before with learning to fly and doing so without the visible controller. It wasn’t completely unrealistic for him to leapfrog like this based on his experience and it does show that he has something of a natural talent for it, especially in a sea of other more casual players who may never master such talents. Sword Art Online Episode #18 Anime Review

With the reveal in the previous episode as to who Leafa is in the real world, it was a reminder that the real world itself does have an impact in ALfheim Online. Whereas things were kept completely separate after the start of Sword Art Online, there is that ability to logout her and that reminder of who we are in the real world. With the revelation about Suguha, something I’ll admit I didn’t see right away, we get to spend some time with her in general as she’s making it clear her interest in the world that her brother was lost in, or at least the games themselves. Getting into it herself was something that opened up a whole new world to her and she discovered her love of ALO and its ability to fly. READ MORE...

Sword Art Online Episode #17 Anime Review

Kirito’s entering of the Alfheim Online game has certainly introduced him to a different kind of play with its ability to fly and the general movements itself. His getting online has not been easy though as there was quite the obvious hiccup that sent him outside of the start city and the fact that all of his skills carried over from Sword Art Online. Suspicious to say the least, but you also don’t want to see a whole arc with him gaining all his abilities again. Bringing Yui into it in a more effective way as also welcome since she has a different role to perform here and her interactions will feel more natural going by the gameplay design so far. All in all, the post-Sword Art Online episodes have been strong for me in getting us moving forward again in a logical and engaging way. READ MORE...

Sword Art Online Episode #16 Anime Review

With the events that have transpired in the series so far, what with it ending the Sword Art Online game just after the halfway mark of the season, it definitely leaves you wondering just what it is that it would do. The previous episode served very well as a transitional bridge piece in which we see the real world fallout from Sword-Art-Online as well as what happened to Asuna and how Kirito has dealt with it. It felt like it worked really well, especially when we had the threat of what’s to come for her from Sugou and how he intends to use her to gain power and then the almost secretive hint given to Kirito that Asuna may be trapped inside this new game, Alfheim Online. It’s hard to imagine him wanting to go into that kind of connective world again so soon, but what better incentive than the woman he married before? READ MORE...
