Work It: The Quick Life and Death of This Season's Worst New Show

As he stepped in front of reporters at this month's TV Critics Association press tour, ABC entertainment president Paul Lee knew a surefire way to get a rise out of the assembled reporters: "So, what do you think of Work It ?" The critics, who had christened the sitcom this season's worst new TV series, laughed. And when Lee put the cross-dressing comedy out of its misery a few days later, few tears were shed. Even ABC execs quietly admit that Work It wasn't good — and left many viewers asking the age-old question, "How does a critically reviled show like that make it to the air in the first place?" //

'Work It' gets laid off ... but no 'Cougar Town' quite yet

The "Work It" era is coming to an end at ABC.The network sent a notice late Friday (Jan. 13) that it's pulling the low-rated, savagely reviewed sitcom after just two episodes. Tuesday's show drew 4.9 million viewers and a paltry 1.5 rating among adults 18-49.So, that means "Cougar Town" is on its way back in the next week or two, right? Well, not immediately -- but that might not be such a bad thing.ABC Entertainment president Paul Lee said earlier in the week that he wants to give Season 3 of "Cougar Town" a "very good launchpad" -- and dropping it into the timeslot of a failed sitcom with no time to promote it doesn't qualify. For the rest of January, reruns of "Last Man Standing" will fill the 8:30 p.m. Tuesday spot on ABC. We wouldn't be surprised to see "Cougar Town" take over the time period in February, but if it's going to... //

No one else drew even half that many people. ABC was the best of the rest with 6.7 million viewers and a 4.3/7, beating NBC's 6 million and 3.7/6. FOX (2.6 million, 1.7/3) and The CW (857,000, 0.6/1) both went with reruns.CBS' lead among adults 18-49 wasn't quite as large, but its 3.4 rating still won the night comfortably over NBC's 2.1. ABC took third at 2.0,... //

Watch promos for each new series below and then try to decide: which is more insulting to mankind? //
